Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo state, has hinted that the explosion that rocked the state capital, Ibadan, on Tuesday night, January 16, could be the handwork of the illegal miners operating in the state.
In a video seen by Oyodefender news outlet, Makinde said preliminary investigation revealed that some illegal miners had stored some explosive devices in one of the buildings where the explosion had happened.
In a tweet on Wednesday morning, January 17, the governor said he had visited the site and other hospitals where the injured are receiving treatments over the night.
Governor Makinde also confirmed that two persons have died from the incident, and 77 people have been injured so far. They are receiving treatments in government and private hospitals across the capital.
Makinde added that he had directed that the medical bills of those who were injured at the incident be covered by the state government, and those whose houses were affected would be provided temporary accommodation while the government supported the rebuilding of their homes.
He then called on the people of the state to remain calm and call 615 in case of any emergency.
